Major Wedding Dress Styles: Choose Which One Suits You Best

Wedding Dress Styles

Wedding Dress Styles

Dress Kelly. Collection Blooming Flowers.

A variety of wedding dress styles can confuse any bride. That is why the wedding dress choice often takes a lot of time and efforts. After all, the bridal outfit should match the style of the wedding ceremony and the time of year, emphasise the advantages of the bride’s body shape, and neutralise the figure disadvantages. Moreover, this dress should be sophisticated and convenient. The knowledge of the major wedding dress styles and their features greatly facilitates the process of necessary dress choice. So, there are six basic wedding dress styles:

  • Ball gown wedding dresses.
  • A-line wedding dresses.
  • Mermaid wedding dresses.
  • Straight wedding dresses.
  • Grecian wedding dresses.
  • Short wedding dresses.

Ball Gown Wedding Dresses

Wedding Dress Styles

Dress Lori. Collection Blooming Flowers.

To embody the atmosphere of magic, a classic ball gown wedding dress with a corset bodice and a voluminous skirt is intended. It is possible to achieve the distinctive skirt fullness due to the use of multi-layer fabrics or petticoat underskirt with 4-6 hoops. The skirt can be both unpleated and draped/flounced.

The contrast between the volume of the upper and the bottom parts of the dress emphasise the waist. This bridal gown style is suitable for both the brides with a perfect figure and the brides with broad shoulders, big chest, or large thighs. It allows the bride to hide a few extra pounds under the puffy skirt and balance body proportions, giving the figure an hourglass shape. The tiny girls should be careful with a ball gown wedding dress. Thus, the full skirt can visually make such girls even shorter, as well as make them seem like a balloon.

A-Line Wedding Dresses

A smooth trapezoidal skirt extension, a fitted bodice, and princess seams accentuating the figure curves characterise the elegant A-line wedding dress. The shape of the dress resembles the capital letter A, hence giving the dress silhouette its name. The corset A-line dresses and lace-up A-line gowns are the most popular ones. So if the bride chooses the right bodice, such a dress will put her figure in the most favourable light. Thus, the dress will highlight the waist and hide the imperfection of the thighs and legs because it does not cling to the lower body. The A-line silhouette bridal gown especially suits the short height brides to create the illusion of height.

This wedding dress style is a multi-purpose one. Therefore, it is appropriate for different wedding celebration styles. So, whether you choose a small ceremony for a few people or a traditional celebration with a large number of guests, the A-line wedding gown will look great.

Mermaid Wedding Dresses

The mermaid wedding dress is a dress with a tight-fitting top and a skirt extending from the knee. The dress silhouette resembles a mermaid tail. The bottom part of the white mermaid wedding dress may have a rounded shape, drapery, cascade of flounces, or train. The dense fabrics give a dress stability of shape, the flowing fabrics add tenderness and smoothness to the silhouette lines, and the airy fabrics make the dress bottom softer and more weightless. This dress style accentuates all the advantages of the girl’s figure.

You can place focus on toned arms, beautiful bust, and gorgeous back. Do not overload the shoulder area because the skirt is the main design element of the mermaid dress. Besides, such a dress requires the high heel shoes. The mermaid silhouette wedding gown is an excellent way to emphasise the bride’s boldness and sexuality. The extravagance of this dress combines with refinement and elegance, creating a compelling bridal look for the self-confident girl. The mermaid silhouette is a sure choice for various wedding styles.

Straight Wedding Dresses

Dress Sophie. Collection Secret Passion.

A straight wedding dress cut is simple and refined. Such a silhouette allows you to select any length – from maxi dresses with the train to extreme mini dresses. For more convenience, the skirt may have a drapery or a slit. The upper part of the straight wedding dress can be high-necked or with different necklines. Open back, wide straps, spaghetti straps, sleeves of various lengths, or even absence of sleeves and straps make this dress equally striking. The accessories and cover-ups should emphasise the stylish and sophisticated bridal look.

Such a perfect wedding dress adds height and elongates the silhouette. The straight wedding gowns fit well the slim brides with ideal body proportions. This dress helps show the bride’s figure to the best advantage. Besides, a wide belt or top enables the girl to make the waist visually slimmer. It depends on the density and elasticity of fabric whether the straight wedding dress will be loose-fitting or tight-fitting.

Grecian Wedding Dresses

Wedding Dress Styles

Dress Paula. Collection The Empress.

The smooth lines, flowing fabrics, high waist, and belt under the bust are the distinctive features of the Grecian wedding dress. Such a dress emphasises the naturalness, tenderness, and slenderness of the bride.

The Grecian wedding gown is the ancient Greece inspired outfit. The skirt falls freely and does not have decorations. Only the upper part of the dress is decorated. The choice of fabrics helps change the dress look and the impression it makes. Note that the heavy satin and silk add loftiness, while the airy chiffon and taffeta emphasise romantic appeal. However, the combination of the fabrics with different texture is also possible.

This dress style is the right fit for any height and figure. Besides, it perfectly hides heavy thighs and a big tummy. Moreover, the Grecian gown is an ideal option for the pregnant brides.

Short Wedding Dresses

Wedding Dress Styles

Dress Amanda. Colection Blooming flowers.

The short wedding dresses are gradually replacing the traditional floor-length bridal outfits. The full circle skirt, loose skirt, pencil skirt, and many other variations allow you to choose the best dress for you. The bridal look will be even bolder if you pick the unusual colour, asymmetric cut, original neckline, or tiered skirt for your short bridal outfit. The fabric density influences the bridal silhouette. Thus, the fabrics ensuring shape stability make the figure visually more slender.

This dress style allows the graceful brides to demonstrate their long slim legs. However, you should remember that the shorter the dress length is the simpler and more modest the upper part of the dress should be. The short bridal outfit is also appropriate for the second day of the wedding celebration. Besides, such a dress is great for a wedding on the hot summer day.

Sizing Guide

Dresses standard length is 120 cm /48 inch/ from the waistline to the floor.

We always recommend having a professional take all of your measurements. For the most accurate measurements, don’t measure over your clothing. Your dress size measurements should be taken while wearing undergarments similar to the ones you will wear with your dress. The measuring tape shouldn’t be pulled too tight or have too much slack, and should always be parallel to the floor.

Bust: Place the measuring tape across your nipples and measure around the largest part of your chest. Be sure to keep the tape parallel to the floor
Waist: Place the measuring tape about a 1/2 inch above your bellybutton (at the narrowest part of your waist) to measure around your torso. When measuring your waist, exhale and measure before inhaling again.
Hips: Place the measuring tape across the widest part of your hips/buttocks and measure all the way around while keeping the tape parallel to the floor.

All dresses on our website can be custom made to exact measurements if you provide us with your custom sizes. If you decide to order standard size, you may use the following charts to map your measurements to the closest size to be ordered. If your measurements indicate one size for the “bust” and a different size for the “waist and/or hips”, we suggest ordering according to the largest measurement. Dresses can easily be taken in by a skilled tailor or professional seamstress.
